It's been 6 years since United Women Workers Cooperatives (UWWC) first appeared near the poolside. Since then-; whenever you need them during mid-nights-; they serve you with hot food to warm you up.
Although most CU students are unfamiliar with the mode of a cooperative society-; however-; with the establishment of UWWc\uff0c we at least have heard of it. In fact-; there are a lot of different forms of cooperative stores or societies-; such as cooperatives for plumbers and disabled persons. Basically-; their missions are similar – to support the community’s economy and to contend with syndicates.
The workers at UWWC are both the operators and the managers of the shop. At first-; the co-op shop was assisted by the Hong Kong Women Workers Association to support smooth business running-; shift organization and to promote interactive learning among worker and students-; Later-; things went on track and the shop is now independently operated.
Unlike other convenient stores-; the aim of co-ops is not profit maximization. UWWC’s unique characteristic is the interaction between them and the people in CU-; teaching staff and students. Apart from selling between-meal nibbles-; services provided by them include newspaper-; magazine and organic vegetables reservation service\uff0c selling of environmental-friendly soap and products from social movement organization.
Some students voluntarily operate the store from 11:30 pm to 1:30 am as the women workers cannot leave CU late. The mutual aid provided by the workers at UWWC and students form a special relationship. It is not difficult to understand why the co-op shop in CU runs smoothly-; whereas a lot of them can’t survive in Hong Kong the competitive city.
‘The snacks from UWWC may not be the best-; but I’m sure they’re the warmest\uff0c’ said one of the students. ‘The staff from UWWC is different from those from other stores. They’re like aunties and friends.’<\/p>\n
