I hope that by pointing out the features of seong <em>jong<\/em>, you will look before you leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Chur (exhausting)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Didn\u2019t you say it\u2019d be easy? How come we have a 10-hour meeting?&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why is he skipping the class again? No wonder, it\u2019s already 6am when he finished his jong\u2019s work.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t get me wrong, I\u2019m not saying <em>chur<\/em> is definitely bad. Just like when I was in the inter-school competition, it was <em>chur<\/em> indeed, but it was also cheerful and sweet for the whole team fighting together until the last second. A cheerful exhaustion requires an ability to <em>chur<\/em> and a passion for what you do. We all have 24 hours per day. Taking up the<em> jong\u2019s<\/em> matter means you have less free time, and it may result in a plummeting GPA or a severe lack of sleep\u2014not everyone is fine with that. There may be people who ridicule you \u201cHow would a university student be unable to <em>chur<\/em>?\u201d The famous university on the other side of the harbour [HKU] always stresses <em>\u201cDo your best and have no regrets,\u201d<\/em> but why do so just for the sake of doing it if your expectation and the reality are poles apart?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Tui<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What? Only three activities in the whole year?<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The extreme opposite to chur is<em> tui<\/em>. Saying a <em>jong<\/em> is <em>tui <\/em>means that it only maintains its most basic operation (or even maintains no basic operation, [and exists] only in name). There are many factors causing the formation of a <em>tui jong<\/em>, like the tradition that the former committees didn\u2019t work much either, jong mates realizing that they don\u2019t really like the <em>jong<\/em> and withdrawing gradually, or not planning to do anything big from the beginning (then naturally they won\u2019t suddenly become active after <em>seong jong<\/em>). I believe that no one wants to have a<em> tui<\/em> <em>jong<\/em> since the very beginning, at least you would have some expectations. Therefore, I hope you remember your vision and thoughts at the <em>jong <\/em>discussion, don\u2019t do it for the sake of doing it and end with no fulfilment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Unclear Meaning<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why am I doing something \u201cbig\u201d that I don\u2019t find meaningful?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many people find that they have no ideas about the meaning of many things they did in the <em>jong<\/em>. Why must I <em>dem beat<\/em>? Why must I make a balloon arch? Why must I attend a 10-hour meeting, hug my <em>jong<\/em> mates and regard this as a firm friendship? Can\u2019t we have a simple promotion? Are we doomed to fail if we have a shorter consultation? Is a 10-hour meeting really better than a 4-hour one? No matter which university you\u2019re in, the former committees, the professors, and senior students would also teach you to think critically and have your own thoughts\u2014so does <em>seong jong<\/em>. In society, just because someone has experience doesn&#8217;t mean he\/she can decide everything or you have to follow his\/her opinions. Even for <em>seong jong<\/em>, you can have your own way.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li><strong>Lou5 Gwai2 (literally old ghost, refers to the former committees)<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If you can\u2019t keep the UC ball from falling down and prevent aliens from arriving at CUHK [1], how can you be qualified to seong jong?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <em>Lou Gwai<\/em> challenged.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The influences of <em>Lou Gwai <\/em>can be positive or negative. Some really want to help their successors and pass their experience down to facilitate the <em>jong\u2019s <\/em>work. But reality is not all roses, and bad <em>Lou Gwai <\/em>do exist\u2014your single word can result in a rebuke.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, don\u2019t be afraid to show your disagreement against something you think is a useless<em> <\/em>tradition. <em>Lou Gwai <\/em>may have more experience, but you aren\u2019t their shadow\u2014it is you who will <em>seong jong<\/em>, it is your goals that you set out to achieve. If you do have different opinions, tell them. In fact, many <em>Lou Gwai<\/em> respect newbies\u2019 thoughts. An example would be the CUHK China Study Society, even if the new <em>jong\u2019s <\/em>localization approach differs from the former <em>jong,<\/em> the <em>Lou Gwai<\/em> still try their best to help by providing more ideas and resources. Therefore, the way you get along with the <em>Lou Gwai<\/em> should not be blind obedience, but communication.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key to Success: Know Yourself, Know Each Other<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a nutshell, it is important for you to think clearly. At least you should know your own expectations, what the <em>jong<\/em> is about, and your<em> jong<\/em> mates. Think and talk with your future <em>jong<\/em> mates before you really become a member of it (even if the discussion takes a long time!). Don\u2019t leave yourself regrets by joining one that doesn\u2019t suit you. I wish all freshmen who plan to <em>seong jong <\/em>a happy and smooth <em>jong<\/em> life<em>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[1] The official name of <em>UC Ball<\/em> is \u201cSatellite Remote-sensing Receiving System\u201d.
